Burners do not remain lit

I have a 20 year-old RUUD gas furnace that has started acting erratically.

DISCUSSION: the thermostat is normally set to stay at 68 degrees from 5 AM until 9 PM, at which time it automatically calls for 65 degrees. At 5 AM the furnace starts normally but after a few minutes the burners go off and the furnace stops prior to a “call for heat to end”. Shortly thereafter the furnace will start again. Sometimes it remains on and functions normally after that. Recently (twice) it did not restart after premature shutdown. After waiting five minutes I recycled the thermostat and it relit and functioned normally. Even when the system appears to be functioning normally there is an audible “clicking” noise that occurs 4 or 5 times during the heating cycle. When this happens there is sometimes a visible, flicker of the burner flames.
MODEL #: UGTA-12ERAJS

SERIAL #:EH5D707F479607788

DRAFT MOTOR: Starts normally

MAIN BURNER: lights normally

This uncalled-for shutdown seems to occur in the morning when it has been operating at lower thermostat settings and when the outside temperatures are near freezing.

As an experiment I set the thermostat to remain at 68 degrees continually and it functioned normally except for the “clicking noise”.

Thread moved to gas furnace forum.

Welcome to the forums.

That furnace should use a control board with a fault LED on it. See if there is a round sight glass in the blower door to observe the LED. Count the flashes for the code.

Has this furnace been cleaned and checked out recently ?
