Sporadic Ignition Sequence-Tempstar/ICP, (NTC5-100BJC)

Sporadic Ignition Sequence - Tempstar- ICP(NTC5-100BJC) Gas 80% Furnace with Honeywell SV-9501 smart gas valve

Observed sequences(s)
1) Call for heat
2) Induction fan comes on
3) Igniter glows red

4a)
If lucky: While the igniter is glowing red a small pilot flame appears near the igniter and ignites the gas burners, followed by the blower, and all is good, with heat until the call for heat stops and furnace shuts down.

4b)
If not so lucky: If no small pilot flame appears while igniter is glowing red, the Igniter will stop glowing red after a couple seconds, pause and several seconds later glow red once again. If no small pilot flame appears during second glowing red igniter, it will stop glowing red and terminate the sequence. At this point I "think" it locks down the process for a long period (except that the induction fan stays On) until power is turned off/on.

Sometimes will take several continuous hours to get started, sometimes on first try sometimes the nest program will start it on its own.

I'm a little confused. After the igniter heats up.... the main gas valve should open and you should get full burner ignition. Are you saying that the igniter only lights a pilot light ?

The igniter glow red and shortly afterward a small approx 1" flame appears near the igniter/flame sensor, and afterward the burners ignite

The Honeywell Q3400A ignitor/flame sensor fits into a pilot burner

Gotcha..... a Smartvalve.

They can be a little tricky to diagnose. There is a diagnostic routine listed in the link below.
