furnace fan doesn't shut off

We have a forced air gas furnace. It works good enough to keep the house warm, but when it reaches the temperature set point, the heat stops but the fan keeps going. It will start to shut off, but as soon as the fan starts to slow it starts back up. So the fan runs approximately 23 hours a day. The only way to turn it off is to hit the main power switch on the furnace.

Due to some other problems, we've already had the fan replaced so I think it might be in the thermostat itself. It's just a plain round bimetallic coil one from around 1964.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Our electric bill is hideous.
