Can't find filter

I am trying to replace the air filter on this furnace - we rent but no maintenace is being done due to the pandemic and it's starting to have an odor. I've done this before but...I can't find the filter on this one. Any idea from the pictures where it would be? The manual is present, says its an Goodman MEC96 / CEC96 - I can't find the exact model number on the exterior.

Usually it is in the ducting between the furnace and the cold air return duct.
Shut the unit off and remove the lower furnace cover to see if there is a filter in there.
Then all you have to do is figure out how to remove it.
While in there check that the area si clean.

If it is not there then go upstairs and investigate the cold air return vent/grill.
Sometimes they mount it behind the grill.

I have a twist on Manden's comment. Look at the duct where the cold air comes into the air handler, There could be a place for the filter between the cold air return and the air handler.

Welcome to the forums.

Most systems don't come with a factory filter. As mentioned it's usually located in the return line directly next to the furnace(yellow circle). I don't see any filter there so I'd look closely at the return grill which will probably be in a hallway.

A dirty filter rarely causes and odors.

There are two service doors on your furnace.
The bottom one allows you access to the blower and control board.
The top one allows access to the burner area where you'll find the model number on the side wall.

There was no filter in the return grille, or obvious place on the return column - I attached a second picture of that below. That yellowed circled portion is suspicious to me too but the filters the management company dropped off for me were huge by comparison - 16x24x1 - so if that is the filter it won't fit.

I appreciate the help! I will try opening it up.

Better picture..... that is an access door in the yellow circle. It will slide up for removal.
The filter will be behind it. Be careful as that tin can be very sharp.

I updated my previous picture with a red arrow.

Yep you are absolutely correct! Thanks. The filters they dropped off were much larger than the filter behind the panel - so that was confusing but it is now solved.

It looks like you may be able to use 4" thick filters and you may have found a 1" filter in that slot.

It contained a 14x24x1 filter. Maintenance dropped off a 16x24x1, which was a bit confusing for a while there. The guides inside the duct were for a 1 filter.
