Outdoor gas-powered lamppost

I'm in an older house with a gas-powered lamppost that I'm looking to disconnect and convert to a solar unit. I think I found the inner line and shut-off to it in the basement, but I'm not certain. I'm keen on doing it myself, removing the lamp/head, but I'm not confident with gas lines/etc. I'd like to keep it safe. Any direction from an expert(s) would be appreciated!

One way to check is to light the lamp outside. Then go inside and close the shutoff you think goes to it. If the lamp goes out that's a good indication you found the correct line. Then, close the valve. Disconnect the gas line on the output side of the valve and cap it. It is very important that you cap the end of the gas line in addition to the closed valve.

To help those in the future I would plug or tape over the open ends of the abandoned gas line to keep dirt and spiders out so the line could be reused in the future. Then label the gas line at both ends so someone in 10+ years will know what it's for.
