Zone Valve overriding Thermostat?
3 Zone oil/hot water system. Zone 2 Thermostat is Programmed 68F most of the day other 2 zones much lower as little use during the day. Today Zone 2 was 74F and even when Thermostat was shut off manually, Zone kept getting hotter and furnace did not shut off. Am I correct to assume this is a Zone Valve or regulator that has gone bad?

Yes, when I first looked at it, it was in the middle, while the other 2 were on auto so I moved it to auto but I did slide it both ways no resistance first. Ok can I do anything about it myself?

Since the valve is spring loaded closed and forced open by the motor..... it sounds like the gears are jammed. I usually pull the head off the valve to see if the valve will fully close with the head off. If it does.... replace the head. If it doesn't.... it may be time for a new valve to be installed.

Is it possible one of the other two thermostats was calling for heat when you turned off the zone 2 thermostat and the furnace continued to operate? If not, either the zone 2 thermostat is bad or the zone control is malfunctioning.

I think we've pinpointed that it's definitely the Zone 2 Valve - We turned off the Furnace from the Emergency Switch overnight, but when we turned it on this morning to heat up the water, Zone 2 was up to 71F within 20 min. and would have continued rising if we hadn't turned it off. Putting in service call for tomorrow.

The zone valve switch may be bad.
Disconnect wires from switch. Put valve in Manual Open position.
That zone will get heat when one of others is activated. At least system is heating place.
Disconnect zone may get over heated, but rest of place will not be cold.

If the end switch was bad... the boiler would run but the zone wouldn't get hot.
In this case the zone is getting hot when the valve is supposed to be closed

Those tiny micro switches go bad with contacts either open or closed. DH has taken bad ones apart!
MB-M might just disconnect it, set valve to Manual Open, then see what happens. If that zone gets over heated would confirm bad switch.
MB_M instead of calling service and paying big $$$ might buy new power head for $56.
Heads are easy to replace, are held on by only 2 of 4 screws to valve body. Other 2 screws seal plate to valve chamber. Loosen them and get wet.
Click on Install Instructions in link for step by step how to. I buy a spare for cold winter nights.
