hvac noob, help id something

Hi all,

trying to accomplish a few things but need some help identifying the "vent thing" in the middle between the furnace and the hot water heater:

We have a heat pump - is this for the heat pump?

Thinking of replacing the heat pump for a traditional furnace/AC combo. If that middle thing is for the heat pump, does it go away if we replace the heat pump?

Welcome to the forums.

Not exactly sure what you are referring to.

Your gas furnace is on the left. Directly to the right with all the white paint is the return duct
to the furnace and then the hot water heater.

You have a dual fuel system.... gas furnace and electric heat pump.

Not sure what your referring to. The shiny galvanized "T' at the top of the picture with the barcode sticker?

Edit: PJ probably nailed it....

Thanks for the quick replies. Yeah, I guess I wasn't terribly clear, the item in question was the vertical duct with the white paint on it.

Is there a rule on how close the water heater can be to something like the return duct? It's really hard to tell from the camera angle, but there's about a foot of space between the two and I'd like to shift the heater over by about 8 inches. Aside from doing some duct/pipe work, any issues with putting the return duct and water heater 4 inches apart?

4" between the return duct and the water heater would be fine.

Not really the best place to store stuff, especially if any of that paint is flammable.
