Do I have a bad aquastat?

My oil heat has been giving me fits lately. This morning I come downstairs and it’s 57 degrees in the house. The heat is set at 68. When I went downstairs I lightly tapped the lo limit knob on my l8124a aquastat and boom the booster pump started running and the furnace kicked on to heat my baseboards. Whatever guidance can be offered is much appreciated.

Welcome to the forums.

If you tapped on it and the pump started that means the relay is bad.
The contacts are more than likely pitted.

It's going to be time to replace the aquastat.

Now the question is, do I have to get the same kind of aquastat or can I get a newer more modern one? And also is it a simple disconnect reconnect type task or is it something that will require an HVAC pro?

There are many types. You don't have to replace with the same model.
Are you handy with electrical.... it shouldn't be too hard to replace.
Take the cover off and post a picture so we can see the wiring..... How to insert pictures.

I ordered the same exact one. So I’m hoping it’s just a simple wire disconnect and reconnect.

Instead of replacing old technology L8124 save $80 and buy a Tekmar 256 aquastat with out door reset. A modern with more accurate, reliable that will save up to 20% on fuels costs. Has display of actual temperate and menus to set up many things.

Easy installation. Connect L8124A T T wires to Tekmar to start burner and 24 volts to power it.

Tekmar a more accurate aquastat even without outside sensor. But 2 low voltage wires to sensor is easy.

Read Tekmar description:
