How do I properly shut off my main gas line?

In case of an emergency, how would I shut off my main gas line to the house? The meter is currently inside my home. Would I turn this knob a quarter turn in either direction, or a specific direction? I was thinking of having a crescent wrench stored next to the unit.

I do see red shutoff valves for all my other appliances (except I can't get to my stove). Thanks!

You would turn the gas valve one quarter turn until the two eyelets matched up.
That's where a lock could be put to lock the service off.
