Ruud Heat Pump Frozen Up

I am in steamy Florida.

I have a Ruud Electric Heat Pump (model # UPFA-030JAS. It's a 1989 vintage! It has been doing a fine job until now.

First I noticed that one room of the house was not cooling. Hmmm.... perhaps a blockage in a duct? i put it at the bottom of my very long "to do" list and that was about it. However, yesterday the whole house seemed very hot. The A/C was on... running non-stop but the air just wasn't cooling. I ventured outside & saw that the pipe going into the unit was FROZEN solid - ice all around it. I took the cover off the unit & all the pipes inside + the condenser (I think), were also covered in ice. I immediately turned off the A/C, chipped off the ice & have left everything to thaw out.

What should be my next step? I plan on calling a service company tomorrow to come and look at the thing. Does it sound terminal? What is the problem most likely to be? Is there anything I can do? Should I turn the A/C back on at this point or sit & sweat it out (literally!)? Any and all advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

inadequate airflow or low charge are the most common reasons a unit freezes up. be sure you have a clean filter, that your blower wheel is clean and running and the indoor (evap) coil is clean. if all is clean, have to call a tech to adjust charge
