Amana heat pump won't shut off
#1
Unit: Amana heat pump (approx 8-10 years old)
Problem: Came home from vacation and found house hot and heatpump frozen. Turned unit off and furnace blower off at breaker box and let unit un-freeze for 24 hours. After turning unit back on, it will not shut off. The furnace fan and the heat pump will continue to run until shut off at breaker.

On a guess. Either there is a problem with either the thermostat, or skinned and shorted wires in the thermostat wiring harness.
It could be that it froze because the fan shut off, and the condensing unit continued to run (stuck contactor).
On the whole, I'd lean towards the thermostat and it's wires.

Unit Won't Shut Off
Hi,
Go to outside condensing unit, turn off ALL power to outside unit (Disconnect outside and Furnace breaker inside).Remove panel to expose unit controls, look at back area of contactor for 2 small wires (one coming to each side)and remove one of them. Turn All power back on and if outside unit runs, the contactor is stuck closed and needs to be replaced. If the unit does not come on,then it's the t-stat or wiring.Turn ALL power back off and replace wire to back of contactor.Remove cover on t-stat to expose wiring.Disconnect the red wire and cover the end with electrical tape.Turn All power back on,if outside unit runs, you have a short (bare wires touching)in the wiring between t-stat and outside unit. If the outside unit does not come on,replace the t-stat. Hope this helps, please keep us posted as to what you find. Take Care and Best Wishes.
