sizing of furnace

I need to install a new gas furnace in my home. I recieved 2 quotes from 2 contractors on new installations. one contractor estimated a 75,000 BTU furnace the other a 100,000 BTU. Who is right and what is the correct size?
I am going with a 90+ efficient unit. The old furnace was 100,000 BTU. House is total of 2600 sq. feet. 1 1/2 story.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Wirenut and Welcome to the Heating and Cooling Appliance forum and our Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

If memory serves me correctly...hahaha...

The formular, is 40 btu's per square foot.

Therefore: 2600 sq. ft x 40 btu = 104,000 BTU's

The contractor suggestion the slightly smaller size unit may have more energy efficiency in mind and using a longer time frame to heat the entire house.

However, both units will do the job well. The choice remains one of whom to deal with. Not the unit's btu size entirely.

Alway's consider the warranties and future service needs for any major appliances your considering to purchase. Price isn't always the best guide for long term appliance investments.

Regards & Good Luck
