Unhappy Heatilator fireplace problems

I recently bought a house with a heatilator style fireplace. It seems to have the following problem:
The circulating fans are working fine but the air output vents are also sucking in air. It doesn't make any sense. Wondering if anyone has an opinion.
Cheers
Karl

Arrow Possible Problem Solutions

Hello Karl and Welcome to the Heating and Cooling Appliance forum and our Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

One quick and easy method to determine if a vent or register is intaking air or exhausting air, is to use a thin piece of paper placed against the vent during appliance operation.

If the sheet or piece of paper sticks to the vent or register, air is intaking. If the paper fails to remain adhered to the vent and or register, the vent or register is exhausting air.

Based upon the information you provided, I suggest you try this test and note the results.

In the case of your fireplace possibly intaking and exhaust air thru the same vents, it's possible if the installation of the venting system was installed incorrectly.

In this case, you'll have to remove the entire unit and check for crossed air supplies and or interconnections of vent tubings.

If your not sure of exactly how the installation is suppose to be installed, a visit to a local fireplace retail store should provide the answers.

Ask the store sales person for an installation guide and or complete owners guide and or request one be ordered for you. The cost to obtain a copy may well be worth the costs in energy savings and comfort.

Suggestions:
Read the manufacturers online web site for product information, problem possibilities, causes and solving methods, part locations, disassembly, reassembly methods, repair proceedures and instructions, pictorials and schematics, which may be available online.
