Hello Sparkin and Welcome to the Heating and Cooling forum and our Do-It-Yourself Web Site.
Basically speaking, there aren't many. It would be far more effective and efficient to problem solve a specific problem then provide a detailed and complete overview in a forum such as this.
There are simply too many types and models to cover. Space to cover all possibilities within the forum and for this topic is limited. It would much more effective if you would read as many of the current, recent and archived questions and posted replies offered.
These prior postings and any or all the replies offered within them contain almost all the required information needed pertaining to the many potential and or possible problems with the heating unit like your describing.
Additional Suggestions:
Read the manufacturers online web site for product information, problem possibilities, causes and solving methods, part locations, disassembly, reassembly methods, repair proceedures and instructions, pictorials and schematics, which may be available online.
If you have a specific problem with a specific heating unit, provide as much information relevent to the problem or condition as possible. The professionals replying in this forum will be happy to assist you.
Use the REPLY button to add any and all additional information, etc. By doing so, the additional information you add will remain within this posting {Thread} and allow the professionals in this forum to follow the topic and reply with helpful advice and suggestions.
Using the above method also moves the topic back up to the top of the list automatically.

As Tom has stated, the systems are numerous. To troubleshoot any HVAC system you'll need knowledge of parts and their operations. You'll have to hit the books....For the electrical try Electricity for Refrigeration, Heating, and Air Conditioning by Russell E. Smith- Breton Publishing. For mechanical and some electrical try Modern Refrigeration and Air Conditioning published by Goodheart-Wilcox.
Have fun.......
