Outside central unit was making humming noise now is dead

I've noticed my ouside central unit (compressor, fan) making humming noise like it was surging. High pitch to low pitch constantly. Now its dead. I checked the breaker and it was ok. THe fan is not spinning and there is no vibration at it so the compressor is not running. If the compressor is bad will this also make the condensor fan on the unit to not work. Please help

You might have a bad fan/compressor capacitor. It is a round or oval cannister that your fan & compressor wiring goes to, has 3 sets of terminals. You can shut the power off to the outside unit and visually inspect it. Look for bulging or liquid leaking from terminals. If so, call a pro to replace.

you might also check the contactor points. It could be you're hearing the 24 volt coil do the humming and some bug got stuck between the points and got electrocuted. When the contactor pulls in, both comp. and fan start.
