What size furnace to purchase?
My current house was built in 1974, is roughly 2900 square feet ( includes the basement) and has a furnace of 137,500 btu. The ductwork gets way to warm and very quickly. I was told by a licensed contractor that I should put in a energy efficient furnace with about 75,000 btu. I don't understand why I should go to a smaller furnace? Is this correct? Any information would be appreciated.

i think
rule of thumb is 25btu per square foot as far as heating goes, but a reputable contractor will do a heat load calculation on your home before proceeding, unless it's tract housing and they are familiar with the unit.
My contractor advised against high effeciency because he feels that they are a pain in the ass to maintain and once out of tune, any efficiency gains are lost.
If your furnace is 1974 vintage, I'm sure that even a mid efficiency would realize you some savings.
