A/C freezing up

My A/C unit was not working very well, and I had condensation driping from the line to the outside unit. So I checked out the furnace and found 1/2 of the inside coil unit frozen. I also found the furnace filter out of place, so it has not been filtering the air for a few months.Thinking that the coils were clogged, I rinsed them with hot water, and was able to see light through the fins.Could half the coil unit not be cooling (out of freon) and the other half be working? I'd appreciate any advice.
Thanks

This is what I'm having a repair person come out for tomorrow. I believe that my unit is low on freon. Both inside and outside units work, but the air isn't cool.

A good rule of thumb that can extend the life of your unit is to change the filter in it every time the utility bill comes.

To answer your question, no unless one side is clogged.
