Question Thermostat/Humidistat

I have an older thermostat that has a humidistat connected with it. I rarely use the humidistat part of it because the air conditioner takes care of the humidity before the humidistat comes into play. I would like to put in a programmable thermostat. Do I need to find one with a humidistat attached to it? Or can I put in just a simple programmable one without it? I have not opened up the old thermostat, but are there extra wires that I'm going to have to deal with and what should I do with them? Thanks for any responses.
