A/C compressor hums, but the fans not turning

The unit is 8 years old. I noticed it wasn't blowing cold air inside, so I check the outdoor unit. It was humming, but the fan wasn't turning. I know this is probably a big "no no", but I used a spatula to turn the fan manually through the grid and the fan kicked in. Any ideas what the problem might be and how I might fix it?

The fan motor bearings are tight

It may not be too late to oil the motor bearings. Look for oil ports (holes with or without plugs) on the end bells (end plates) of the motor. If the motor is field oilable, put in some electric motor oil. (Most hardware stores carry it in little plastic bottles with an oil spout and cap.)

In a pinch 20 0r 30 weight NON-detergent automotive oil will also work.
