A Christmas Poem

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF
PLASTER AND STONE.

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO
IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES
OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT
CAME THROUGH MY MIND.

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,
IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,
ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,
SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED
A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.

WAS THIS THE HERO
OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED! UP ON A PONCHO,
THE FLOOR FOR A BED?

I REALIZED THE FAMILIES
THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD,
THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.

THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM
EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER
HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE
IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.

THE VERY THOUGHT
BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES
AND STARTED TO CRY.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED
AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
"SANTA DON'T CRY,
THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;

I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,
I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD,
MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS."

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER
AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,
I CONTINUED TO WEEP.

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,
! SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED
FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.

I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE
ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR
SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA,
IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE."

ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,
AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
"MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT."

This poem was written by a Marine stationed in Okinawa Japan

That's cool. My wife was talking about our troops just last night and was in tears over it and we don't even know any personally but it's like they are family. Like big brother taken care of a bully.

Once again, you guys are there to keep me straight. I thought it was different than the first one I read. I read one last year, but it was the original, about the Marines.

Thank you for showing where the true credit for the poem should go. I think the poem is beautiful no matter which way it is written. It reminds me that thanks to those that are willing to fight for my freedom, I can have Christmas with my family, the way I choose to celebrate it.

Oh this also reminds me. Maybe you guys can help me out with this one as well. I sell makeup and skin care. Some of the ladies were wanting to gather items of our stock (skin care/health care) and send them overseas to the soldiers. A military wife posted that sometimes the packages can't go to the soldiers due to the content and where they are stationed. The products need to be totally portable and destroyable. It makes sense. How 'unseen' can you be if the enemy comes up on a pile of empty lip balm tubes or bottles of shampoo that wouldn't burn or disintegrate in a fire and the remains be totally removed. Or how portable is the product when empty and a soldier is carrying empties around with him?

This is way I took the message posted in the group. Her request was to check with the military here on where you are sending your things for the soliders. They can give you specifics on how these items have to be pkg'd (the item itself, not the total shipment packaging).

What do you guys think?

Domestic violence victims

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,
SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED
A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.

Or, a victim of domestic violence with stomped in ribs, black eyes, and knots on the head and not lucky enough to have a place to sleep where one can sleep silently. We need to step back and take thought about the many victims in our society--children, women, and adults. There are other wars afoot in our society and there are others who suffer from PTSD than soldiers.

I agree! I remember many a holiday season spent exactly that way.

Seems the holiday pressures bring on more violence against children, women, and yes, battered husbands.

May the holiday season bring hope to all those at war - whatever war they are involved. Hope is what will see them through and out of their situations.
