Car=female?

I was reading a thread in the automotive forum and a member referred a car as "she"-"...She's not doing well" or something or other. Why is a car a "she"?

I don't know why but it's always been that way. Maybe it has to do with our love affair with vehicles.

i knew boats were "she's", but cars, too? hmmm....i think it would depend on the vehicle. i wouldn't think those hunky cowboy-types driving those humongous souped up, tricked out pickup trucks with the monster wheels think of their trucks as "she's"......do they? does that make me gay cuz i kinda like those trucks???

We guys tend to call anything uncooperative "she." Just kidding, I think it has to do with the chauvinistic view that men are supposed to take care of women and therefore anything a man takes care of is a she.

marksr: aha! At least you admit it.

Annette: answer: "Yes" j/k

mitch17: lol!...interesting theory.

I don't think females refer to their cars as anything, right? We just drive them! Though...I know there are female fixer uppers and lovers of cars, but do they refer to their car as a gender type?

I have heard women refer to their cars as she, but definitely a lot less often than guys do it.

It's tough for a guy to be affectionate to a "He".

Cars began being called "she, or her" when automobiles were the new thing to have. They were unpredictable, very particular of how you treated them, and were high maintainance. See the pattern?
