Coffee causes sleepiness?

So I've done my little research about caffeinated coffee...and I can't find the info I need.

Was wondering if caffeinated coffee can give a person an opposite side effect. Seen one drink coffee late in the evening and instead of this person staying up, it makes this person sleepy! Is that weird or what? Or is it possible for a person to have no side effect at all? I don't mean logically, but maybe there's some medical reason for this?

Maybe they're so tired at night that the coffee just doesn't do anything to keep them up? I'm a coffee drinker but rarely have any after 3pm. I have drank a cup late and still fell right asleep if I was tired enough.

no medical basis of information on this, just personal experience. At work I would drink AT LEAST a pot of coffee per day or night depending on what shift I was on and had no problem going to sleep at all. (and no it wasn't de-caf)

Ritalin is a downer is kids and an upper in adults. Benadryl makes some people sleepy and some people hyper. Opposite effects for different people. Are you normally hyer? Caffeine, which tends to make most hyper, may have the opposite effect on those that are already hyper? Just wonderin?

Interesting. For me personally, I am not hyper. Coffee (caffeinated) will definitely keep me up all night. I won't drink coffee after 3pm unless I want to be up all night past 9pm. Maybe different brands of coffee would matter? Hmmm...

Speaking of coffee..I need a cup

Maybe I accidentally bought decaffeinated

Could be the person's craving for coffee has them a little on edge, then having some relaxes them?

Depends on how much caffeine a person consumes during the day, a cup of coffee might not make that much of a difference, keeping in mind that caffeine has a half life of several hours.

I know two people who have claimed that caffine has the opposite effect on them. I don't know if it causes a brief high and then they crash, or if it truly makes them tired from the get-go. One of the people is almost definitely ADHD, and may be manic depressive, so his ups and downs seem screwed up to me anyway...

Personally I've been drinking coffee since I was a kid, but since college, only a cup or two before noon. If I have caffine later in the day I am wired and I actually get caffine hangovers (yucky digestive issues, feeling like I've been drugged) the next day. Or maybe it's the lack of sleep? ;-)

I'm not sure about the upper effect but if I don't get 2 or 3 cups a day, I can't shake properly.

I can verify the effect of drinking coke before you go to bed. Do that and you can forget about sleeping.

strange thing. my family and I were just having this discussion this morning at breakfast.

apparently caffeine does not effect one of my brothers at all. can drink a cup immediately before heading to bed.

it makes me jittery for a relatively short period of time but after that I am spent and tired and sleepy. The warmth of the drink tends to make me sleepy even as the caffeine is kicking in.

I would suppose much of it depends on how much you drink and how much you intake via other beverages normally. My little bro used to start the day with a couple cans of Mountain Dew. I doubt coffee would phase him after that.

Then I have a friend that all us work buddies make every effort to keep caffeine away from him. He gets very wired. A bit over the edge for us to deal with.

ha ha...yeah...I'm the same way. Give me more than 2 cups of coffee for the day and I'm wired. It's kinda cool and not cool at the same time, but I'll tell ya, if I'm REALLY tired and have to work... it helps. Probably only end up doing this once a year, but it works for me.

Would be kinda neat too, to have a cup of coffee and still can sleep. I LOVE coffee!

Weird....I think I can drink coke and go to bed. However, I don't drink a lot of soda.

Anyone know how much caffeine there is in coke vs. coffee? Or even a Mountain Dew?

WOW! Excellente...

Guess coffee (drip kind or Starbucks type) is pretty high up there compared to the sodas. I'm suprised those energy drinks aren't as high if not higher than coffee.

Interesting...

Thanks nap

"Was wondering if caffeinated coffee can give a person an opposite side effect."

Yes
I personally have many opposite reactions to medications
Many medications that say "may cause drowsiness" will keep me up all night
I can drink a cup of coffee after dinner and I get sleepy rather than awake

If I have dark chocolate after 8PM though, I'm up all night

Ingesting caffeine beyond a certain amount, such as: two cups of brewed coffe, tends to have a paradoxical effect by causeing relaxation. It requires that the coffee be drunk within a short time, say 30 minutes to an hour. Since the effects of caffeine take about 20 to 30 minutes to manifest themselves, the boost from the first dose takes place later than most think.

Interesting and good info Chris. It takes me about 3 HOURS to finish my cup of coffee at work.

When I have my first sip of coffee in the morning at home, I coulda swore it felt good and made my eyes wide open. Must be a mental thing.

A shower does that for me in the morning

Don't get me wrong, I love the coffee too, but the eye opener is the shower
So, yeah, it's a mental thing I'm sure

Yup, agree with the shower thing. I sometimes shower 3 times a day when I'm slowing down or need to clear my head. How could people have lived without showers?

3 times a day?!!!! Save some water for the fish! Doesn't your skin dry out?

I could shower... I mean I DO shower, but that's just not good enough.

Great topic and information. I just had to chuckle at DIY's "up all night past nine". WOW...that's waaaaaaaaaay to late at night. . I'm lucky if I'm off work by 10pm.
