Is It Explotation?

Watching the Olympics the announcer was giving a short bio of one of the skaters. He was saying how much sacrifice the skater had made to be in the Olympics including being deeply in debt and maxing out his credit cards just to compete. Meanwhile NBC is making tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars on the Olympics. To me it just doesn't seem fair for someone to profit while the people they profit off of struggle with debt.

Then there is the hypocrisy of calling them amateur games and yet allowing professional basket ball players in the summer games. That to me just adds to the exploitation since they decide who can and can not profit from their skills while everybody else profits off the athlete's hard work.

I agree with you, to some extent.

but you also to understand that we are a capitalistic country.

So if it's your idea we have to pay you for it, it sucks but that's just how it works in america

i think good businesses will prevail over the bad ones in the long run

But the Olympics isn't American. It is international.

Professional hockey players in the Winter Games, too, plus the variety of other "amateurs" making big bucks from endorsement contracts.

Nobody is required to be poor to compete - this skater could be making endorsement money for his trouble
