A DIY pitfall

At a friends BBQ they brought out a bean bag toss game (cornhole game to you midwesters). It's played similar to horseshoes except its a lot friendlier to women and kids and a hell of a lot easier on the lawn.

Naturally the wife decided we needed one. She found them on line and at a local sporting goods store. Prices for "regulation" sets ranged from $79.95 to $159.95 for a couple of pieces of wood and some bean bags.

I can do better than that I said. I'll make it myself.

DIY cost of the project:

2 pc 3/4X2X4 birch plywood - $35
Poly finish - $11
Spray paint - $5
2X4 trim - $12
Veneer edging - $7
Hardware - $3
Misc sandpaper, glue, pocket screws $?
Bean bags - my wife insisted on store bought - $31

Total - not counting my labor - $104

It was the bean bags that did it, you should have insisted your wife make those

However, I'm sure yours is nicer and better built than what you would have gotten in the store and you'll always be able to say you did it.

Sounds about right.
I've done that a couple times in the past.
In the end, I spend more $$, but I walk away from the project with the pride in my work and know it's going to last.

I'd rather use a DIY game built with quality parts, rather than a cheap, flimsy store-bought one. Just my opinion.

I would be curious if the store-bought ones were particle board; that would really make the DIY one better.
