Another sad chapter for the poor folks who had damage to their property only to now find out that their home has burned to the ground. Just like what happened on the pier with the businesses that caught on fire. A real shame I wish them luck in getting another house.

Well that's depressing. What happened (ie. what caused the fire?).

I had same first thought as Ray. I would be surprised if that's not the #1 cause of dumpster/trash fires.

When I was building my house a neighbor was walking around to check on progress. He flicked his cigarette butt on the ground as he walked back home. He turned around to see about 1/4 acre in flames. Luckily the gravel driveway and bare dirt around the house stopped the fire on that end but a farmers field and a couple dozen trees I had planted were lost. Most smokers really don't have a clue. Done with a cigarette they just toss it out somewhere, usually on the ground or in the bushes, lawn, in the street.

Of course the dumpster fire could have been a neighbor getting rid of their fireplace ashes. The fire went out but they didn't realize how long coals can stay hot when insulated in ashes.

I think that's my biggest complaint with smokers - the litter.

Not to mention it's often still burning....

In Maryland we have had fire alerts because of very little rain and they are targeted to everyone. People sometimes just don't think though and this is what a careless mistake causes. I am not sure about the amount of rain fall in New Jersey but if it is the same as here they need to be more careful.

We haven't had much rain in the last couples months or so. I find smokers to be quite arrogant about their smoking. A lot of them of the attitude "it's my right and I can do whatever I feel like".

I don't think it's arrogance. It's complacency. I think smokers have the thing in their hand so often for so long that they no longer think about it. Done, toss it aside. Just like littering I think education and awareness would go a long way. Dispose of your butt responsibly. I don't mind if someone drinks a soda. Just don't toss the can out the window when driving.
