One note, with a roof rake, if you decide to rake only half way up, it can form a dam at the new freeze line. Did that once, never again.

Bud,

Thanks for the heads up. Never thought of that.

This morning Western New York has had a rather unique storm. A very narrow (5 to 10 miles wide) band of extreme heavy snow and wind swept through our area starting in the Niagara Falls area going south into the North Towns, over Buffalo, into the South Towns traveling east through the rural towns. It only lasted between 30 min to 60 min as is swept through. Complete white outs. Then clear skies. Not a lot of snow in terms of inches but lots of wind and swirling snow. Lots of drifting. Fun for all.

I consider this my "hump" week.

I've been in Vermont now roughly 28 years, and January 9th, 2004 was the coldest day I've had to deal with up here, when I awoke to -48F (and a power outage).

Yesterday it only dipped down to -31F; but our power stayed on and the incoming water lines didn't even freeze !

Today, it's a balmy +7F, so I conclude that the worst is now behind us and a general warming trend is underway; maybe even global warming ?

Nothing beats Chicago lake effect snow. Clear blue skies, and snowing like crazy. Gotta love the north.......then leave it up there Winter of '93 working on Ohare tarmac cured my curiosity of snow and cold weather.

Ya, those metal roofs can be a real concern. My last building we had to use safety cones to keep people and vehicles away until the snow released. We didn't use the stops as they keep all of the weight up top. People used the gable end entrance until the avalanche and then we cleaned it up and all was fine. From 16' up it would do some serious damage.

That's what I like about north east tenn, we get a taste of the snow/cold but it generally doesn't stick around too long. That said, it seems like this winter and last have been harsher than normal

Been a pretty lame winter compared to normal here in MT. I think we've only gotten about 30 inches of total snowfall this year with 20 of those inches showing up last weekend. We've only had about 5 days below zero so far with the coldest being about -45.
The wife and I went to Vegas the week before christmas.....was nice down there. 50 degrees and playing in the pool getting funny looks from the locals.
