Insane weather

It's been snowing all day. 4"-6" on top of the cars. Freeway closed in 3 areas I know of. State highways closed everywhere.

Temp just went above 32 so now some will melt and become ice overnight.

Even places in SoCal that NEVER see snow are getting hammered.

I know it may not seem like much to those of you in the NE, but we have zip, zilch, nada in the way of plows, salt or sand spreaders out here.

I guess my next move will have to be FL.

I'm in San Diego and this is one of the coldest days I can remember. The folks back east will laugh at this, it's 52 and I'm freezing! The mornings are usually colder, but then it warms up.

I have family in Lake Havasu City, AZ. They said it's snowing there.

At least it's just a temporary thing for you guys! We're stuck with the cold over here.
Hasn't snowed here yet, tho.

Currently 2 days into a 12 day plus stretch of all below freezing except the coming Sunday when it will snow. Currently 12 with a high today of 20. I though that might warm you up a bit .

Coming from LA got to Barstow, Other haft said day before did not want to see Kingman, Asked again and than she said yes lets go see it. Was going to tell you but you know how it goes. Only had a short time to look around. Stockton sure has built up since I was last there. went east on Andy Devine and looked at a couple of houses out there.

4"-6" of snow and they close the highways? How quaint.

Ya, the snow bird approach is looking better all the time. Daughter is vacationing in FL right now and wife heads down in 2 weeks. Wife just retired so I'm sure I will get some pressure when she returns. To say the least, she doesn't like the cold.

Hardly a patch of snow left anywhere and with this cold the frost is going deep. Unless we get a foot or so on the ground, in late Jan we will be busting water pipes below 5 feet. Those are fun to repair.

Norm, weather update,
A lot of people are loving it. Right now there's snow at about 1,200 feet, only about 45 minutes from my house. Time to get the sleds out and have some fun.
Highest in San Diego is Mount Palomar, 5600 feet. People go crazy to see the snow.

Finally stopped snowing last night here. Like I said though, still some icy conditions due to ground temp and air temp. Some roads still closed according to ADOT. Wife was slammed at the hotel last night, had to turn away hundreds of people. Was giving out non-emergency police number.

Same happened to me either here in AZ or maybe NM many years back when a winter storm hit. Wound up sleeping on a church pew. If you had a hotel/motel room you were a king that night.

We've had an extremely wet fall and start of winter this year although the weatherman claims we were 2" short for the yearly total. What really gets me is how wrong they seem to be every time they predict a dry day! It didn't rain last night and they said today would be dry until after dark ... it started drizzling shortly after noon and hasn't stopped yet I've got tractor work to do if it wasn't so slick.

The weatherman can't seem to make up his mind about the upcoming storm either. It went from snow to maybe missing us to all rain. I guess I'll know when it gets here.

Actually had to turn the ac on last night for about 30 minutes before bedtime; humidity has been rather unseasonably high lately.

Yeah, right up until hurricane season.

Since I started this, I should update. Crazy low night temps (in the teens) seem to have gone for now. 50 degrees as I type but feels much warmer in the sun. Still some snow slowly melting in the shaded areas. Supposed to be almost 70 and sunny tomorrow.

Yeah, shut up all of you with the warm temps! We're getting a Clipper system moving thru tomorrow with 1 - 2" of snow and temps in the 20's for the next 3 days!

-1 here right now. Wednesday high will be -2, with a low of about -16. That is real air temp folks, not with wind chill.

It's supposed to get up to 38 degrees today and then stay below freezing until this weekend with some nights dipping into the single digits but no snow ..... and tenn is part of the south - at least I thought it was.

Vic, that is why all the yankees laugh at us when we go to gridlock over 4" of snow. Our infrastructure budgets would sink like the Bismark if we invested in snow removal equipment. Where would we store it for years before it was needed again. Let is snow, believe the forecasts, stay home, and enjoy it. So you aren't at work today. Neither is anyone else. If you are at work, then you are stuck and will have to do double duty.

We are getting cool tonight, 26, then stays that way and drops to 7 tomorrow night. Gotta get ready for little old ladies calling with frozen well pumps.

Yeah, but it's a dry cold.

What hurricane season? Haven't had so much as a tropical storm anywhere near in over five years.

How's that global warming working out for ya? Personally I'm thankful for it--6 mornings are bad enough.

I just tried out one of those roof rakes today. As I was assembling it, I thought what a piece of junk. Seemed flimsy. But hey, it did a fantastic job. I had about 3 to 5 foot drifts. The weather conditions were just right. To cold to form ice in the roof. Came off in big chunks. It made a great rake for the bushes also.

Hi Norm,
My roof raks also is not impressive, but it has been doing the job for about 8 years. I will probably buy a back-up if I see a good one at a good price. Knock on wood, once we got past November (set a record for snow) and everything melted we have only had a couple of inches, but mighty cold. Frost will pass the 5' mark this year for sure, -40 wind chill night before this.

One note, with a roof rake, if you decide to rake only half way up, it can form a dam at the new freeze line. Did that once, never again.

Bud

Hopefully the cold is on it's way out. Yesterday was bitter cold [for east tenn] and stayed in the teens all afternoon ..... and then I wake up this morning and it's 28 Kind of strange for it to be so cold when you go to bed and wake up not much below freezing.

Second day in a row I'm having to wear long pants and jacket; cold snap over after today, though.

A little humor for all you roof-rakers:

Funny. All the commercial buildings, especially the ones with metal roofs that we work on, require snow stops at strategic points just to stop the snow from falling off and damaging precious heads, I guess.
