Internet Relay Chat

There are thousands of chat channels or chat rooms, on different subjects. I was wondering if the powers that be would be interested, in creating a live chat channel or chat room.

I currently frequent many chats mostly on the topic of computers. I thought that I would mention the possibility, of a DIY chat.

Any comments for or against?

LOL, I didn't know that anyone here besides myself used IRC. There was a web site to help with internet addiction. The problem was that you had to use the internet, to get help, which reminds me of George Carlin who's opinion on self help books was "If it were truly self help, you wouldn't need the book".

Did you also participate in the BBSes. I don't go that far back, myself.

Yep, dialup 800 numbers mostly... although i racked up some big phone bills too... I had a 300 baud modem on an old Mac Plus. Talk about painfully slow! ASCII art....

For me it was Usenet. Now AT&T no longer provides access and one of the long time free access sites I used has folded.

Live DIY chat would be interesting. However, the whole point of this site is to sell advertising. Can they have ads on a chat site?

It's sad that the main point of the site is to sell & not to offer help to people who need it. There are no ads on chats. Of course, a link to this site can be in the motd (message of the day) which is seen when one connects. That would bring people to the site & sell whatever.

That is the world we live in. This internet thing is not free. It takes people, equipment, and energy to run, none of which is free.

If we can get to the Star Trek Utopian world where all our needs are taken care of I would be more then happy to donate my time, oh wait, I already do.

I used to use IRC and UseNet. I think redit has pretty much replaced UseNet. I also called BBSs and was a cosysop of one with my friend. Those were fun days.

I never watched star trek & I'm not going to start now. The question is Do you want an IRC channel or not?

I think a live chat would be kind of neat.

Ok, so far we have 2 votes for IRC. Something tells me that it's not going to happen.

Never liked the idea of chat. When I post here I think twice before writing then edit sometime three or four times. Chat your just throwing it out there off the top of your head without thinking. I don't like that but that's just me.

Back in the old days I used to chat on Yahoo and AOL I remember had chat rooms for a short time and the chat rooms were not bad and kind of fun. I have also tried other chat rooms since then and some of the experiences were good and some terrible. A chat room here might or might not do well and chat rooms do require a great deal of moderation. What I would be afraid of is some people getting angry and saying something they might regret saying. With the forum as it is I or anyone else can take their time before saying something they might regret.

Chat rooms I still believe are fun things to go to when they are available but I personally don't see it as a good thing here in my opinion.

The Only chats I use are forum chats and Paltalk though I haven't been on their in a while. I used to use MSN messenger and AIM. Do those even exist anymore?

I'm with Ray on this one. We all need to think twice and talk once. It's bad enough that we write things meaning one thing but being interpreted another way.

Besides my slow fingers could never keep up with my fast talking voice in my head.

A while back I suggested a like button, but that was shot down for various reason. How about a agree/disagree button?

Instant messaging still exists. A like or agree button wouldn't work very well because there are many different thoughts, in one post. I might agree with some & not the others.

So far, there will only be 3 of us in a DIY chat. I guess it's time to forget about it.

That's the fly in the ointment. Chat rooms attract bots like crazy..and crazies like crazy! This forum is broken up into dozens of topics so would there be only one chatroom--like many forums have, or several based on topic?
One is fine if it's for entertainment and you don't intend to actually help anyone. Several requires much staff & time.

BBS was a bit before my interest in computers but I've done IRC, usenet, CU-SeeMe. I miss usenet.

As I already said, it's time for me to forget about the chat but not due to a shortage of moderators. There certainly isn't a shortage of moderators here. In fact, we have more than we need.
