I went to town why?

I see my eye doctor every 6 months. Last time I went they set me up with an appointment for Tuesday 5/24/16 at 8AM. So I got ready and left out early only to find out while they gave me an appointment card for today, my appointment on their computer is for Thursday ..... and my doctor has today off so they couldn't even work me in.

Guess I get to do it all over again in 2 days

I had that happen once as well, so I ALWAYS get an appointment card. Have also got to the office to discover the doctor is on an emergency call and they just rescheduled me. More and more are getting my message that I use text and that they should use it as well. Pharmacy sends a text when my rx is ready. Dentist is on board. Doctors office, not doing so well.

The beauty of text is they can just send it and forget it. The pharmacy system is all automated.

Fortunately, I'm less than 10 miles from any of them and i always seem to need something in town anyway.

Actually of all the doctors offices I go to - I like this one the best! They've never fussed at me if I forget my checkbook [they'll send a bill, no problem] and there is never a long wait. Check in/out usually takes 30-40 minutes ..... which is about how long it takes to get there.

I did happen to bring along the appointment card that showed they made the mistake, not me.

So lets get this straight. If we, as patients forget or are prevented from making a predetermined appointment we get charged for that "visit" even though no services we rendered. However, if the doctor missis the appointment, for whatever reason we don't don't get any compensation for time lost! Do I have that correct?

Yes, that's correct. I have missed appointments & no one has charged me but if they did, they would be skating on thin ice.

Between this and Norm's kidney stone thread I'm sure glad I don't live where you guys do. ALL the medical clinics as well as dental clinics I use call me the day prior (or sometimes a couple of days, especially if it is a weekend or holiday coming up) to remind me of my appointment. Some use a computer calling device (which I detest) but most use a real, live person to make the call. One clinic also sends me an E-mail a few days prior in addition to the telephone call.

Many years ago, I was about 26 or 27 at the time, I had a doctor's appointment. I probably sat in the waiting room for a good thirty minutes or more past the appointed time before even being called back to the examining room. I told the nurse I was not pleased about being "kept in the dark" concerning the delay and she acted like I was an ungrateful slob, that I should be thankful the doctor was willing to see me at all. It was another fifteen minutes or so before the doctor came in and I told him in no uncertain terms that keeping me in the dark about delays was totally unacceptable. I further went on to say that if the delay was going to be more than ten minutes or so the receptionist should tell me up front so I could decide if I wanted to wait or if I should make a new appointment. The doctor agreed with everything I said.

Several months later I had a routine follow-up visit scheduled. As soon as I walked in the office the receptionist said, "Joel, we are running late and it will be at least another forty-five minutes before the doctor can see you." I then asked her if she would prefer to make a new appointment and I would come back a different day. Her eyes lit up and she said something like that would be fantastic or something. I/we made a new appointment for the following Monday and I left. When I returned I think I waited maybe three minutes, barely had a chance to sit down, and then I was whisked back to the examining room and the doctor appeared a few minutes later. It was good for me, good for the office staff and good for the doctor that I chose to make a new appointment.

A similar situation came up with my dentist once. I told her the same thing, give me the information and let me decide if I want to wait or reschedule. At first she misunderstood, thinking I just didn't like to wait but when I explained in detail that my rescheduling would allow her to get back on schedule for the day she thanked me profusely.

These days my regular doctor is VERY good about time. When I check into the clinic I usually go directly to the examining room where the medical assistant takes my weight and blood pressure and the doctor arrives within a few minutes. She spends as much time with me as I desire, obviously no overbooking in her practice. The other doctors are not quite this good but I almost never wait more than a few minutes after my appointed time.

Now maybe this is because I live in an urban area and there is no shortage of doctors here. Maybe living in an area with one of the top rated medical schools in the entire country also has a positive effect. I don't know. What I do know is that communication is the answer and that once the doctors and office staff understand this the problem pretty much disappears.


As for pharmacies...that's a different story but my experience is that the smaller the pharmacy the better the communication and the better the communication the better the service.


Oh, once I was scheduled for a follow-up with an ENT doctor. Knowing it was a follow-up and that he would spend maybe five minutes with me I parked in a restricted space on the street. The restriction was no parking from 4 to 6 PM to facilitate the evening commute. My appointment was for three so I knew I would be out long before four.

Nope. I checked in and was told to take a seat. For the next thirty minutes or so I watched the receptionist make goo-goo eyes at the typewriter repairman. Finally I was ushered back to an examination cubicle and left there. I didn't have a timepiece with me and there was no clock in the immediate area. After several minutes I started looking, and then wandering, down the hallway looking for either someone to tell me what was going on or at least find a clock. Finally I walked out telling the receptionist I would send the doctor a bill for wasting my time. She just sat there with her mouth wide open, obviously astounded by what I had said.

I got to my car about two minutes before four so avoided both the ticket and the tow. I wrote a letter to that doctor asking him to pay me $35 for the missed appointment. He did write back stating he was not in the habit of paying for missed appointments but at least he knew better than to try to bill me. I never returned to that doctor.

Most doctors and dentist have 24 hour reminder or call back service to allow a patient to cancel an appointment without charge. My big gripe is the referral process when it's not needed and the quota referrals that are made.

About an hour ago I received a recorded message that my appointment was for tomorrow and I was to confirm it by hitting number one or reschedule it by hitting number two. Since I feel that my current condition is under control and it's only a matter of time that I will pass the stone, I cancelled the appointment. About 10 minutes ago I got a call from the doctors office asking when I will reschedule. I told the receptionist that I will call when I felt it was necessary and my schedule allowed it. She was not pleased! You could tell by the tone of her voice that they wanted this referral for the sake of billing only. Not a word was mentioned as to my condition or if I was having any difficulty or to call back if I felt I was in discomfort.

Probably the biggest thing I liked about my last 2 general practitioners was how efficient they were. The lady doctor always had me in/out within 30 minutes. My next doctor was the same way although I heard his wait times increased as the day went on - but I always try to get an early AM appointment. Both of those doctors died .... and not of old age.

Not thrilled with my current GP. Wait times are acceptable but could be better. You pay when you first get there or they won't see you until you do. And since they are in with the hospital conglomerate they have no qualms with sending you a bill 2 yrs later claiming you either didn't pay or underpaid Need a new doctor but many won't take new patients on medicare and then they'd want me to take all kinds of tests to verify the need for my meds

I do like my small independent pharmacy! They were the first pharmacy I went to when I first moved here but when I started taking meds on a regular basis I switched to a major chain because of their extended hours. After I quit working I was at the chain drugstore waiting for 45 minutes for the refills I called in the day before and wondered why I was there [no longer needed the extended hours] so I switched back to the small drugstore

I've often thought about telling a doctor that made me wait a long time that he'd have to wait because I was busy with something else but was scared he'd leave the room and not come back for another hour

This is exactly the problem my wife and I have. We hardly ever have had a need for a doctor so in part its our fault for not being more tentative in finding one. And we agree they will put you through test, and if nothing is wrong with you they will find something.

I can't remember now just when I changed doctors but I think it was shortly after I retired, which would make it eleven years ago. My previous doctor had me on lots of different pills, maybe eight different ones and I needed new prescriptions for all of them. I had maybe a week's worth left when I first saw the new doctor. I told her about them and she immediately wrote prescriptions for each one, stating that we could evaluate the necessity at a later time. She also wrote a referral to the clinic's optometrist, something I had tried to get my previous doctor to do for over a year without any luck.

I was so impressed as soon as I got home I called my medical insurance company and asked to change my primary care doctor. The rep asked when I wanted the new doctor to replace the old and I told her yesterday. She then told me it was done. I was impressed that it was so easy. Best part is that my current doctor is young enough that she will be my doctor til the day I die.

I stay away from doctors. I only go to a dentist who is about 3 blocks from me. I wasn't always 3 blocks away but I am now. He has been my dentist since 1992. The office is almost never behind schedule. One time the dentist came in to the waiting room to apologize that he was 5 minutes late. I told him, "Sit down & take a break." We chatted for a few minutes. As much as I hate to be there, I saw no reason to complain about 5 minutes.

Well I went back to the eye doctor this morning and wouldn't you know even though I set my checkbook out so I wouldn't forget it - I did but when I checked out the girl just smiled and said she'd send me a bill

I was end/out of the office in 20 minutes Apparently the drops take longer than that to fully dilate your eyes because my vision was decent when we left and since my wife hopped in the passenger seat - I drove. Halfway to walmart and I could tell the drops were working, had it been any further I'd of pulled over and got in the passenger seat!
