WOW! I guess I'm not totally surprised. That bit about the sockets only excepting a specific brand of bulb is disturbing. I'm still digesting the other "intrusive" aspects of the article.

As far as longevity of bulbs I never believed any of the claims. They are based in very controlled lab conditions and do not reflect normal use. The biggest "killer" of light bulbs is the constant on/off cycling of the switch. Up until recently if an incandescent bulb was turned on and never turned off it would virtually never burn out.

After 40 years our store is dropping the GE brand of lighting in lieu of Philips. GE is unable to keep up with demand for their LED line.
