before anti-freeze

Curiosity has gotten the better of me again Back when I was a kid either they didn't have anti-freeze or it was too expensive. My daddy used to drain the water out of the radiator every fall and pour in alcohol. The alcohol would be replaced with water in the spring because of it's lower boiling point. Anyone know what type of alcohol was used back then?

Thanks, I didn't realize that was considered an alcohol. I have a mixture of calcium chloride and methanol in my tractor tires.

Well, I've heard of "bathtub gin". Don't know about tractor tires, though.

Y'all just put water in the tractor tires as it's not likely to freeze. When I bought my tractor it had calcium chloride which is highly corrosive. Over the years I've had flats/leaks and have added methanol to them, it's not corrosive although doesn't add as much weight as calcium chloride. They have a new product made out of beet juice that is heavy and non corrosive but at 4-5 dollars a gallon and with each rear tire/tube holding 35 gallons ......

Probably more than you ever wanted to know about tractor tires
