U.S. Navy Armed Guard, WWII.

I'm one who never heard of them. I like reading the articles this time of year and never knew there was a separate branch of the service assigned to protect the merchant ships. Another group of, heroes in my mind, that we need to remember.

It's unbelievable how dangerous it was to cross the ocean in WWII and the sacrifices merchant seamen made to get cargo over to Europe. The German subs were just waiting.

For those unfamiliar with the U.S. Navy, merchant ships still steam with a Carrier Battle Group to this day.
The merchant ships are called United States Naval Ships (USNS) and they do a great job and always have.

The US Merchant Marines suffered the highest casualty rate of any of the services during WWII.
