New forum look?????

Is there a new forum format look, or am I missing something?

It seems to be designed for phones not computers and I don't see a way to change it back.

There was a change in the version of software used. Minor kinks are being ironed out. You will need to be patient.

Understood, at least I wasn't imaging it.

How about an announcement as a sticky at the top of each sub forum as I'm sure I won't be the only one that notices it.

Thanks for the heads up. I hope this look is not the future.

Looking at this current format..... I'd say this is it.
Optimized for a broader range of devices.

I like a lot of things about it so far... mainly it is way faster than the old version which often never seemed to quit loading the page.

So MUCH wasted space though. I'm going to have to do something with my settings (if I can find them) to change the background before I get a sunburn from all the whiteness.

It wouldn't even let me log in initially, had to delete all DIY cookies.

Somehow I thought they were rolling BACK, from the version that was having all the problems.

What am I missing? How can you tell if a thread is one that you have added or responded to. Use to be a little green check mark. And what happened to the e-mail notification that I use get? Hope that those things are going to still be available.

If you go in to Forum Actions at the top and select Edit Options, then scroll down, you can choose to Do Not Subscribe or various notification methods. Do Not Subscribe has always been the default setting. I dunno about any marks, though someone else brought it up in a Mod Forum.

All I know is that the page loads quickly and doesn't jump around while I'm trying to read something or write a comment.

I agree about the bright white background. Almost have to use solar eclipse glasses to view for any length of time.

The "Quick Link" to Who's Online is still eliminated, and that appears to have been intentional.

Vermont, I already responded to you in the other thread that you already asked about this. Nothing is intentional. The software just installed the default settings. Now the techs need to fine tune everything to get things the same, or close to, the way it was before.

How can you tell if a thread is one that you have added or responded to.
Norm, there's what looks like a person at the bottom left of the box. That's how you can tell if you replied to a thread.
As for notifications and subscriptions, the techs are working on that.

That "other thread" appears to have fallen by the wayside and quite inactive . . . . supplanted by this one.

Afraid you'll have to get used to the new one. It's not going back.

Me too but then I'm never crazy about changes .... it's just something we'll have to get used to.
Remember when we had to switch from XP to Win7? many of us didn't like it at first but I assume we all got used to it.

They could make this green with pink polka dots and I wouldn't
care, this thing is FAST now and no jumping around.

There's also a black box with a white check to the right if you're subscribed.

And I've received emails last night and today on this and the ship thread.

I'm not bothered by the new look I adjust to pretty much anything quickly. But again there should be some ability to adjust the background color to something less offensive to the eyes. The brightness is probably the only thing I cannot adjust to easily.

I'm going to guess that after more important things are ironed out, they'll add some color.

Color is the last thing on the list IMO. Besides the things I have mentioned, I want to add that I would like to see more than 1 white space allowed between sentences. Probably no one noticed but a double white space between sentences which is standard when writing anything gets reduced to one white space.

I like the new trending topics and latest topic windows which were not there before. I do agree though a bit more white than I like and I may start using my computer glasses which are tinted to reduce the glare. I also noticed you can't change the font and I really prefer times new roman as a font. This will do though and it is nice that my web page add-ons still work on this website. I also agree that everything seems to load faster which is nice.

If you use the yellow reply button directly below the last post.... you are taken directly to the advanced editor mode. Just below the text box you'll see manage attachments and directly below that you'll see manage subscription. I believe you need to set that for every thread you want a notification from.

Also at the bottom of any page you'll see "Forum Jump". The fourth selection down is Who's Online.

As far as log in..... clean out your cookies. The new one from DIY should resolve the log in issue. It did for me using Firefox. I've been logged in for two days now.

Lets see...1 space below

2 spaces

3 spaces

end.

I don't see it. Carriage return (Enter) does what it's always done.

Gunguy, those are paragraphs. If one sentence ends & I hit the space bar twice, on the same line, the software will remove one of those white spaces.

Oh, spacebar! Got it. Actually, I think that's pretty common with software and an acceptable form now. In fact, when I proofread some things I type (not here...I never proofread here...lol.) they look odd with extra spaces.

Look up "sentence spacing" on Wiki, gives some history and conflicting views. I guess when you can zoom the typeface to whatever size works for you, the spacing doesn't seem as important or desirable. Does it do it in the middle of a sentence...say right here ? Or is it just after punctuation probably?

Nope, that was 4 spacebars between here and the punctuation and it only put in 1 it appears.

The site now does not require me to log in every time so that is a huge plus, yea, turn down the white background and its a big plus!

Gunguy: Yes, it does it in the middle of a sentence. If you didn't put in the 3 dots, it would have moved the rest of the sentence closer. My mother taught English & my sister taught it as a second language. I don't want to say that I'm grammar **** cause that's a bad word these days but you get the drift. With all the changes in grammatical rules over the years, it's not a surprise that you found differences, in your search. The only thing that I can say is if English were built as a house, the inspector would have condemned it.
