Film rights...

What happens to intellectual rights to a film after the company that owned them no longer exits? Would I legally be able to distribute an old film if the company who made it no longer exists?

It depends if the copyrights have expired and if the movie has become public domain.

Just because the company no longer exists does not mean that someone else doesn't own the rights.
