DO I patent or not?

I have this idea for a product and it has worked great now since 1990, At the time I was told if I put everything I have and mail it to myself reg. mail and don't open it. That would help in showing I had this idea back then... I don't have the money to spend for a patent what should I do? I did try selling it back in 1991 but only in my area, I did sell some. But gave up once I started working... Would like to get things going again on this, but don't know how to market it and if I should get a patent. I was told I couldn't get a patent on this idea because it was too general.....Sorry about not going into to much of it...

Probably best to talk to an attorney on something like this

Without a patent, anyone could copy you, get a patent themselves and then force you to stop selling the product

If memory serves me, there is a time frame from when the product is introduced to the public and how long you can wait before applying for a patent.

If your capitol investment is minimal, IMO, make what you can and move on if it gets copied. If you will have to tool up with every dollar you have and more, you need protection, but between the patent costs and start up costs, it takes a lot of money and time.

Visit the dot gov site and do a lot of reading.
