Instead of paying for insurance, couldn't I just tell the ER I'm illegal?

I've been out of work for a while now and living off savings. Paying for health insurance is killing me. If I were to walk into an ER and tell them I was illegal, would I be able to skip over all the bureaucracy and just get treated gratis?

Since we can't get "political" in the forums, you know the answer. But to get better/faster service in the ER, Make yourself up a lightweight black jacket with the large letters ICE on the back. The ER will clear out so you can get prompt service

I would think any non insured person that goes to the ER would be treated the same. I'm sure the hospital sends each and everyone of them a bill. Don't know how many pay the bill but I'm sure it's a small percentage.

I'm not commenting on whether you should do this but I can tell you regardless of my financial situation that I would not be able to live with myself if I did this.

What I would do is walk in and explain my financial situation and see what kind of arrangement could be made - many facilities are surprisingly willing to work with you if you just ask.
