US Flag placement

What is the proper position to hang a flag?

I hang my flag from my front covered entrance from the top edge (draped vertically) as opposed from a pole. Behind the flag is my entrance light. I usually place the flag so that the light shines behind the stars. In other words as you look at the flag the stars are to your right. I was told by the mailman that is wrong and the stars should be facing left as you face the flag. Which is it?

Seems he is right, according to this site... if it is treated as a window or hall.

Yes, the jack goes to the observer's left when hanging vertically, same as horizontal.

I agree, the flag should be turned around so the stars are in the upper left when viewed from the street.

In a situation where it hangs vertically over a street and is viewed from either side, the union faces either north or east. That wouldn't apply here as its on display primarily for people viewing it from the street... just like hanging it vertically in a window where it is also seen from either side.
