Mirror removal and adhesive

Plate mirrors on my wall are being held up only by the electrical outlet cover (as amazing as that sounds) and when I tried removing it, there were these horrible black blobs of dried adhesive on the walls. How do I remove the adhesive and/or repair the drywall beneath?

the black blobs is mastic ( kinda like a tar base glue for mirror ) Not the best of stuff to use any more, because it does give sometimes if the wall is not prepared right. A sharp wide taping knife could scrape it off, but the tar substance could be deep in the sheetrock.Leaving a dark spot when your done. Not sure if it will work, but after you scrape it off, ( and some sheetrock could come off with it ) Mud, sand, primer a few times , then paint.

If the blob bleeds back through, you will need to replace that section of sheetrock.
