Type & thickness of glass shelves

I'm wanting to install glass shelves 12" wide and 48" long. It is for the bathroom and will have towels, washclothes, etc., nothing too heavy except maybe a candle or decorative small vase. What thickness or type of glass does it need to be? Does it need to be tempered?

Thanks!

It does not have to be tempered. If you are going to support the shelves only on the 2 short edges, you need 3/8" thick glass. If it's supported on 2 short edges and 1 long edge you can use 1/4". If you are using standards and knife brackets, 1/4" will work if you mount the standards 6" to 8" in from each end.
