Plant growing light

Can a plant growing fluorescent light be put into a ceiling (8" from floor) to give supplementary light in a greenhouse? I ask because I don't want the light source to hang down just above the plants. Is the ceiling too far away to hang this light and still get some help for the plants?

Hey Chips,
8"? Did you mean 8'? 8' will be fine. In fact, if you bring the plant too CLOSE to the light, it will develop sunscald in the leaves, especially plants like citrus that are highly susceptible to sunscald. 8' is plenty of clearance to provide adequate light for the growing plants and not having to worry about burning them. But remember, providing light for plants is like drinking alcohol - do it in moderation, because too much, they will go nuts
