test kits for water

I want to test the quality of water coming out of our faucet + out of the fridge filter. The purpose is two-fold: to see how bad or good the water is to begin with and whether it's really that critical to replace the fridge filter as often as it is indicated.

Can you recommend any specific test kits? I found several on Amazon but not sure what to pick.

I live in MD near DC.

Hello ilyaz!

Most home improvement and grocery stores carry the Pro-Lab Water Quality Test Kit. You can perform the test at your home (with immediate results) for pH, alkalinity, chlorine, and hardness. It will also give instructions for testing iron bacteria, hydrogen sulfide, and lead.

The refrigerator filter should be replaced regularly to make sure that no bacteria or other foreign material enter your water.

Best wishes and let us know how things turn out!
