painting hinges

Does anyone know how to paint hinges? I have old brass (gold) hinges and I want to match the stainless steel (silver) handles.
What paint do you use so it won't peel when the hinge is in use?

I would be surprised if you actually had stainless steel door hardware! You most likely have polished or brushed chrome or nickel plate. Nevertheless, whichever you have you will never be able to get a painted finish to match the locksets. The simplest remedy will be to just purchase replacement hinges with a matching finish. That said, if you have your heart set upon painting the hinges (something I never do) you could lightly sand the surface, prime with a metal primer and top coat with the color of your choice in an enamel (oil base). Despite your best effort in prep work, you will probably find that some of the paint will be rubbed off the knuckles with use. This would be another reason not to paint hinges. Good luck!
