fastening wood to concrete

I have 2 steps that come down from a concrete slab foundation to a lower level, also all concrete. The problem is, the original builders of the house made the runs too narrow for my taste, they don't feel safe as they are about 8.5 inches. I was thinking we could fasten 2x8's to the fronts of the steps making them an inch and a half wider...I'm planning to tile over the whole thing. What sort of fastener would be best for anchoring this project? I also wondered if there's a type of adhesive I should also use....

Thanks for your help,

Tara

You could take off of these projects and widen the treads prior to tiling.
