Doorknob problem

Hello! I have a 1920's bungalow and I'm having a problem with the brass doorknobs on the front door. They keep coming off. It looks as if they're supposed to just hang on to each other (it's the center of the square shafts that separate).

I'm having trouble picturing it chazj
The knobs are attached (or supposed to be) to a square shaft, and the shaft itself is separating?
The shaft should be a one piece deal
Or is it that the knobs are falling off the shaft?

More info for Doorknob problem

Hi there -

Yes - believe it or not, the shaft (with the knobs on each end) separates in the middle. Instead of this:

(-----)

it is like this:

(-- --)

One of the split ends of the shaft has a hole in the end - for the smaller post on the end of the other half of the shaft to stick into. The post on the end of the other half of the shaft is not a straight post, it gets larger and smaller as if it is meant to go into the end of the other half and catch.

Is that clear as mud?

I think it's pretty clear but wow, I don't think I've run across those
If you want to e-mail me some pictures send me a PM and I'll give you my e-mail addy
I can't picture how the shafts are supposed to ....attach together
I mean, one slips into the other...but what is supposed to hold them together?
