removing hooks with wings

I just can't think what to call these things, but there are several hooks in my ceiling that have little wingy things that opened up after they were screwed in. I want to take them out. My thought is to cut the screw off of the wings and use drywall mud to cover the holes. Is there a better way? Thanks.

No need to cut them. Just put some downward pressure on the hook and unscrew it. As long as you keep some pressure on the wings, they will not turn in the ceiling. Then just patch the holes. Good luck.
