Nail length

Is there a rule of thumb to determine how long nails should be for framing and sheathing? Like how much nail should go into the piece being nailed to?

Framing, I use 16cc, and for sheathing 8cc. You want approximately 2/3 of the nail in the substrate or studs.

Another question? Why can't I find 3-1/2" collated galvanized stick framing nails anywhere (Lowe's, Home Depot, web)?

Personally, i would only buy galv. that way you can use them both inside and outside. I've never seen "cc" but I'm sure it must mean "d" a/k/a "penny". As far as gun nails, I use 3 1/4" which is actually 12d. All the lumberyards and home centers around me seem to sell galv. nails in this size.

Sorry about the terminology. CC just indicates cement coated (as opposed to common). Like Kona, I buy only galvanized, and usually ring shanked. The holding power is great. I thought you were using a hammer. I buy #12's almost exclusively for framing. The 3 1/4" is just fine. Good luck with the project!
