Replace door knob with lever type

I would like to replace an exterior door exit door knob with a lever type knob. This would have to be able to attach to the split spindle on the approx 50 yr old Lockwood mortise lockset. The purpose is that I have small children whose small hands cannot now open this door and I figure they could better operate a lever type. Does anyone have knowledge of whether such a replacement exists they could refer me to?

Thanks.

Look for a replacement lever for a storm door. They use the same size square "spindle" with a set screw. May work.

Thanks Chandler. I'll stop at Lowes tonight and give it a try.

You could also try something like this. They may require retightening once in awhile but typically work ok. I have run across the occaisonal mortise lock knob that is too large for them though.
