Door Knob Refinish

I have the regular looking hollow metal brass/gold door knobs. They are the standard ones that came with many houses built about 10 years ago.

I want them to look like really cool, maybe like this http://www.directdoorhardware.com/Weslock/600knobs/Impresa.jpg

Any suggestions about refinishing them?

Door knob would have to be removed. Protective lacquer coating will have to be removed with lacquer remover. Metal can be polished and polish residue wiped off with lacquer thinner. Knob can be sprayed with coats of lacquer. Eventually the process will have to be repeated as protective coating deteriorates and metal oxidizes.
