Bathtub faucet replacement

I have tried to replace the hot/cold bathtub faucets because the cold water knob just turned and turned without turning the water on. Seemed easy enough for this female. Bought new faucet set, removed screw from center of knob, pulled old knob off but the square metal piece that fit into center of old knob won't come off of the pipe. I see three small holes on this piece. Do I need and Allen wrench. One came with the new set of knobs but seems too small for holes on old piece. How do I get these old pieces off ???

The set screws probably take an allen wrench that is smaller than the one with the new knobs.Go to a hardware store and buy an inexpensive set.Get one that has both regular and metric wrenches as many of these handle parts are imported. That will probably give you the wrench you need.
