using threaded bolts to mount basketball hoop on roof over garage
I am trying to mount a basketball rim and backboard to a pre-fabricated wooden support structure on the roof over my garage. The person I got it from had mounted it with 14" threaded bolts.
I tried drilling holes and then screwing the threaded bolts but they just spin, they won't grab. Is there a special drill bit I need to but to make these bolts screw in?
I have tried hammering the bolt in to the hole I dirlled to get it started with no luck.
Thanks.

I hope the "threaded bolts" you are referring to are lag screws. Lag screws are tapered at the end to engage the wood. Use a drill bit smaller than the outer diameter of the screw. The bit should be the size of the center, solid portion of the lag screw where the threads are located.(must be smaller than the threads in order to grip the wood) You need to install the lag screws into solid wood such as a rafter. The roof sheathing under the shingles will not be thick enough to hold the screws. You may need to add blocking to the underside of the roof to hold the screws. Good luck with your project.

They are not lag screws, but threaded bolts. Threaded the entire length of the bolt. I will try the lag screws, but I couldn't find any long enough, will check again.
I don't have access to the underside of this area of the roof over the garage. I will have to trust the lag bolts are strong enough. I will be putting 8 inch sections of a 4x4 post under the frame for added support.
Thanks.

what you have is called all thread
what are you expecting the thread to bite to ?
the lag bolts aren't going to bite well to the plywood decking , you'll need to find a truss .
personally there is no way I would do it the way your describing why not patch the holes and mount the backboard on a separate post .?

It's a small house and a small driveway. There's no place to put a post. I can't get a roll away hoop because we have a common area shared by the neighbor on the side of the house where it would have to be stored when not in use.
Will a stud finder locate a truss separately from the decking?. i don't want to be drilling holes guessing.
If I can't be sure I'll hit a truss I won't mount it. It was free so nothing lost.

Might try using carriage bolts.. They have a square area under the head that fit in a square on channels.. That way, you can tighten them and not have them turn..

The stud finder did locate the trusses and the lag bolts are working. It's really secure.
It's only my 10 year old daughter shooting baskets so the only stress on the rim will be the basketball.
Thanks for all the tips and assistance.
